Wedding Day Hair Tips

Before I was a wedding photographer, I worked behind the chair as a stylist. I am going to give you some inside tips as a former hairstylist to help you be fully prepped for your wedding day.

#1 SCHEDULE A HAIR TRIAL - There is a reason this is listed first because it is so important! This will give you an idea of how long it will take to get ready on your wedding day. You want to make sure you schedule enough time on your wedding day, so you do not start the day out behind. This will also allow you to know if you truly love the hairstyle you chose to wear and how it will hold up throughout the day.

#2 UP OR DOWN- If you have never worn an updo a day in your life then your wedding day might not be the best time to try it for the first time. Remember that trail you need to schedule? During your trial, you can decide if an updo is for you or if you need to make any adjustments. Wearing your hair down or half up is also very popular. A soft wave just screams elegance! I would strongly recommend going with the option that feels the most like you and is comfortable. I have several brides wear their hair up for the ceremony and then do a quick style change for the reception if you just love both options!

#3 NEVER GO LAST- On your wedding day, you should be either the first person to get ready or in the middle, NEVER LAST! In the event, that time runs over you will not want your hair or makeup being rushed. While the bridesmaids and moms are still getting ready we can go out and get some beautiful photos of you. Once the last bridesmaid is ready we can start working with your bridal party. You should feel relaxed and enjoy being in the moment on your wedding day, not playing catchup!

#4 DIRTY OR CLEAN HAIR- The stylist of Instagram have voted and the response was 50/50. I would ask your stylist what they prefer! But to be very clear- dirty hair isn’t truly dirty/oily hair- it is one day after your hair wash.

#5 WHEN TO BOOK YOUR HAIRSTYLIST- The average answer I received when I asked the stylist this question was 8-12 months before your wedding date. This will also allow time for 1-2 trials! If you have a top vendor you want for your wedding it is always best to book with them as soon as you have your date secured.
